Excellent Display Specimen

A natural meteorite specimen having no fusion crust but a smoky patina indicative of an upper atmosphic break up. Once part of a large iron meteorite broken under the pressure of atmospheric friction and pressure. The taiga strewn field of Sikhote Alin, Russia were scattered with fragments as well as fusion individuals on the day of February 12, 1947.

This 3 kilogram meteorite museum piece is 8 inches tall, 6 inches wide displays well upright. As a flattened piece no more than 1.5 inches thick, it looks alot larger than its weight . Nice smoky patina on sharp edges, indentations and torn metal demonstrate the extreme power of an explosive impact on meteorite iron.

Sikhote-Alin is the largest meteorite fall of our time. The strewnfield associated with this fall is over 6 km long and occured deep in the Tiaga with more than 106 impact holes up to 28 meters in diameter. The area looked like it had been bombed; trees were ripped apart, deep holes gouged and giant scraps of metal were strewn about. The largest specimen recorded was 1,745 kg. We visited the site in 2000 and the initial strewnfield was explanded to >10 km.
