Meteoritic Iron Specimen

This Campo del Cielo meteorite stands out for its remarkable stability and distinctive character. The arid conditions of the strewn field where it was found have helped preserve flight features sculpted during its intense descent through Earth’s atmosphere. The sample is adorned with numerous pits and scoops, including a prominent 17mm round indentation.

The specimen is visually striking and displays well, standing upright on its side as shown in picture 2. Its solid feel is evident, with a meteoritic iron content weighing in at 90% of a pound—an impressive heft when held in the palm of your hand. Recommended for small group education too.

First documented by the early Spanish explorers in 1576 Campo del Cielo is aptly translated "Field of the Sky". The meteoritic iron was later used in making weapons for the war of independence from Spain. It is a polycrystalline, coarse octahedrite with silicate, graphite, and troilite inclusions of significant size.
